When we release a fish, we hope it swims away strong — but for many reef species caught in deep water, that’s not always what happens. Rapid ascent can cause barotrauma, a condition where gases in the fish’s body expand faster than they can escape. The result: bloated swim bladders, bulging eyes, or organs protruding from the mouth — all signs that the fish may not survive even after being released.
That’s where Return ’Em Right comes in.
What Is Return ’Em Right?
Return ’Em Right (RER) is a conservation initiative designed to reduce post-release mortality of reef fish in the Gulf of Mexico. It equips anglers with both the knowledge and tools to safely return fish to the depths where they were caught, improving their chance of survival.
Through a free, quick online training, anglers learn how to recognize barotrauma and use descending devices — specialized tools that help fish recompress as they’re released. Upon completing the course, eligible participants receive a free gear package that includes a descending device and accessories for proper release.
Funded in part by Deepwater Horizon restoration funds, Return ’Em Right is a partnership among research organizations, government agencies, and fishing industry groups. Together, they’re building a culture of stewardship on the water — one fish at a time.
Why It Matters
Even with the best intentions, catch-and-release doesn’t always guarantee survival. Studies have shown that fish suffering from barotrauma can die shortly after release if not handled properly.
By teaching anglers to “return ’em right,” the program helps protect vital reef species — such as snappers and groupers — ensuring healthier populations for future generations. This isn’t just about conservation; it’s about preserving the fishing experience itself.
How the Program Works
-
- Take the Online Training
Anglers complete a short course (about 15 minutes) covering barotrauma, identification, and release techniques.
- Take the Online Training
-
- Receive Free Gear
After completing the training, qualified anglers receive a free descending device package by mail.
- Receive Free Gear
-
- Apply What You Learn
On the water, anglers use the gear to return fish to depth, minimizing stress and increasing survival rates.
- Apply What You Learn
The process is simple but powerful — giving every angler a way to make a measurable difference.
Tying It to Local Waters
While Return ’Em Right focuses on the Gulf of Mexico, its lessons apply to anglers everywhere, including those fishing off Miami-Dade County and South Florida. Many species targeted along reefs and wrecks — like mutton snapper, grouper, and amberjack — are just as vulnerable to barotrauma on the Atlantic side.
For local fishers and projects like Made In Dade, a Miami-Dade–focused organization, incorporating these best practices could elevate community awareness and responsibility. Adding sections about barotrauma prevention or descending device use to species profiles or fishing guides can help anglers make more sustainable choices every trip.
A Simple Way to Give Back
Fishing is more than catching — it’s about connection: to the ocean, the ecosystem, and the next generation of anglers. Programs like Return ’Em Right remind us that with the right tools and a little know-how, we can give released fish their best shot at survival.
So next time you’re out on the reef, remember:
Catch ’em clean, return ’em right, and keep the ocean thriving.
